Spyke (Japanese: ダウニー Daunii, Downy) is a character found sitting in a back alley of Inkopolis Plaza.
Description and Services
Spyke is a slender sea urchin with pale orange-tan skin and a mass of black spikes with purple tips growing from his head that partially hide his face. He wears a poncho, multi-colored bracelets, and clogs. He sits on a rug that looks similar to his poncho. He also wears multiple bangles on his left wrist.
When players first visit him after reaching level 4, it enables them to order gear that other Inklings are wearing in the plaza. Players can order up to three pieces of gear at a time, but are only able to buy one each day. If a player orders more then 3 pieces of gear, another order will have to be cancelled to make room for it and the new item will appear at the back of the queue.
Spyke's prices for gear are quite a bit higher than in the store. If the gear is not bought during the day its available, Spyke will get rid of it. Spyke will not trash gear in your queue in the days you don't play Splatoon.
Spyke has the chance to get the same abilities as the original wearer on the clothing you ordered. This chance goes up with the player's level, and the more abilities that the item has, the more expensive it is. Even if no additional abilities are obtained, the item's price is still increased.
Once players reach level 20, they can ask Spyke to add a slot to existing equipment for the price of 30000 coins or one Super Sea Snail. If the equipment in question already has 3 sub-slots, then the player can use this to re-roll them. The main slot cannot be re-rolled.
- The Super Sea Snails that Spyke owns resemble rock mushrooms from Super Mario Galaxy 2.
- Spyke was announced during the special Splatoon Nintendo Direct on May 7th.
- After clearing Hero Mode, Spyke will refer to you as a veteran, showing he knows somewhat about the Story Mode.
- Spyke speaks with a distinct British dialect.
- Spyke's Super Sea Snails next to him shake, while some others are just empty shells. This may imply that Spyke rips them out with his screwdriver and eats them, keeping the shells. This is a nod to actual sea urchins preying on turbo snails. It's rather dark, too.
- In the NA version of Splatoon, If Spyke offers your ordered item and you cannot afford it, but you try to buy it from him anyway, he will say the phrase, "YOU WOT MATE?" in a reference to the internet meme phrase and British slang term, "U wot m8?"
- Spyke's location is almost exactly across from the Cooler Heads store, which is ran by Annie, a sea anemone. This could be a possible nod to sea urchins and sea anemones being natural enemies.
- Spyke's design is based on the phrase "Street Urchin", which refers to homeless children who make their living on the streets of large cities. Spyke himself is a literal street urchin who makes his living working in the back alleys of Inkopolis.
- Some of the Super Sea Snails next to Spyke shake, while others are only empty shells. Sea urchins in real life are also known to eat snails smaller than themselves. This may imply that Spyke removes the snails and eats them, possibly using the screwdriver next to him.
- During a Splatfest, Spyke can be seen tapping his hand to the beat of the Squid Sisters' music.
- Spyke's orange-hued skin may be a reference to the orange-colored flesh and innards of actual sea urchins.
- A Sea Urchin assumed to be Spyke can be seen in Splatoon 2's Inkopolis Square. He can be found in a cafe at the back-right of the area, near Murch. He is looking at a laptop.
