"We're on duty today, whether you like it or not. Can't sleep while the enemy plots!"

Agents 1 and 2 are generally busy with their own problems these days, so these guardians of order protect the denizens of Inkopolis from the shadows.

— Cap'n Cuttlefish & Agent 3 reason for joining Team Order

Agent 4 is the type of squid who goes with the flow, even when the waters are raging. This silent squid values freedom & flexibility more than anything, & while it's rumored that Agent 4 helped Marie save the world, it was probably mostly Marie's idea.

Even Octolings who've been freed by the Calamari Inkantation don't lose their discriminated personalities. Agent 8 can't sleep until every nearby weapon has been cleaned & checked. In fact, Sheldon might be looking to Eight to work at Ammo Knights.

This Agent 3 is a Splatsville youth who earns a living salvaging scrap with their Smallfry buddy. After a chance encounter with the New Squidbeak Splatoon, who are fighting the Octarians, they are appointed "Agent 3".

— New Agent 3's Description

Agent 3 (3号 San-Gō?, lit. Number Three), Agent 4 (4号 Yon-Gō?, lit. Number Four), and New Agent 3 are the protagonist Inklings of the single player mode, Hero Mode, and the player's character in multiplayer modes, respectively. They may be either male or female, and their hair and eye color may vary, depending on the player's choice of customization at the start of the game.

Agent 8 (8号 Hachi-Gō?, lit. Number 8), also referred to as Number 10,008, is the protagonist Octoling of the Octo Expansion. They can be either male or female, and their hair, eye color, skin color, and pant type may vary, depending on the players choice of customization in the start of the expansion.

As they are the Inkling who joins Craig Cuttlefish's New Squidbeak Splatoon to rescue the Zapfish, they are known as "Agent 3", with the Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie, as Agents 1 and 2, respectively.

In Splatoon 2, Agent 3 is away with Cap'n Cuttlefish, so another Inkling, the protagonist "Agent 4", follows Marie to find her missing cousin Callie and stop another Octarian theft of the Great Zapfish.

In Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion, the protagonist, Agent 8, also referred to as Number 10,008, goes through a series of tests to escape the Deep sea metro in pursuit to reach the so called “Promised land”, and escape to the surface.

In Splatoon 3, Agent 3 is given the title Captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, replacing Craig Cuttlefish, who has retired and passed down his title. Leaving the position of Agent 3 open for new recruits.

History[]

Agent 3[]

Main article: Agent 3

Not much is known about Agent 3's background, except that they are at least 14 years old in their first appearance, since they have complete control over their squid and humanoid forms.

Agent 3 initially went to Inkopolis to "be where fashion is made" but got swept up in Cap'n Cuttlefish's quest to save the Great Zapfish. In Octo Valley, Agent 3 completes various missions to retrieve stolen Zapfish, defeating many Octarians along the way. Eventually, Agent 3 confronts DJ Octavio, rescuing the Great Zapfish and restoring Inkopolis' power supply.

Octo Expansion[]

Agent 3 returns in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion. Agent 3 retains their original Hero Suit, now also wearing a gray torn cape with a number "3" in Inkling text. When Agent 8 collects three of the thangs, Cap'n Cuttlefish will decide to make a "Missing" poster for Agent 3 which will have the player determine Agent 3's gender, skin color, and eye color.

After Agent 8 collects all four of the thangs, the Telephone builds it and tricks them and Cap'n Cuttlefish inside to kill them until Agent 3 busts in from the ceiling and destroys the blender, responding to the CQ-80 distress signal. Agent 3 is then rendered unconscious, and Cap'n Cuttlefish stays behind to look after them as Agent 8 goes through the hole Agent 3 made. The remains of the Telephone then attack Agent 3 which has their mind partially sanitized and hijacked into tying up Cap'n Cuttlefish and attacking Agent 8 before they can leave.

After being defeated, Agent 3 is once again unconscious and wakes up after Agent 8 defeats the NILS Statue and Commander Tartar and now has a band-aid on the back of their head on as the staff credits roll. When Agent 8 comes back to the Deepsea Metro, Cap'n Cuttlefish tells them that Agent 3 went back on patrol, explaining their absence. After Agent 8 completes all the tests, a locker in the Central Station will open and Agent 8 will remember everything to their battle with Agent 3 which prompts another arena fight between the two agents.

Agent 3 is armed with their Hero Shot Replica and has an arsenal of special weapons at their disposal. They will always enter the arena by a Super Jump and activate Splashdown upon landing. They'll go after Agent 8 while throwing bombs and their Hero Shot has the fire rate of a regular Splattershot, they're also able to swiftly dodge away similar to the Drop Roller ability when taken hits by Agent 8's Octoshot.

There are different phases which has Agent 3 use different specials: They'll use the Baller, the Curling Bomb Launcher, the Sting Ray, and repeated Super Jump Splashdowns. Agent 8 can shoot the Baller to stop Agent 3, shoot at Agent 3 when deploying Curling Bombs, throw bombs when using the Sting Ray, or shoot at Agent 3 when they briefly stop after using the Splashdown.

The battle of Agent 8 and Inner Agent 3's has them don the classic Splatoon colors of blue and orange, respectively. Inner Agent 3 now has different specials at their disposal as well as having Autobombs instead of Splat Bombs. Inner Agent 3's Hero Shot has no spread to it and will always shoot straight.

The arena is now significantly smaller with no inkable walls or platforms with only the floor being the only inkable surface. With each phase, Inner Agent 3 has a different special: Inkjet, Bubble Blower, Autobomb Launcher, and Tenta Missiles along with Splashdown. When defeated, Agent 3 is called "Inner Agent 3", representing Agent 8's inner hero.

Return of the Mammalians[]

Agent 3 returns in Splatoon 3's Return of the Mammalians.

Sometime before the events of Splatoon 3, Agent 3 was promoted to the captain of the New Squidbeak Splatoon, with Cap'n Cuttlefish stepping down and going into retirement. They are wearing the Cap of Legend, Hero Headset, Cap'n Cuttlefish's unnamed clothing, and sandals.

After the new Agent 3 collects the three treasures guarded by Deep Cut, Agent 3, now the captain, and the Squid Sisters build it into a lawn mower-like tool together. The captain then uses it to cut off all the fuzz around Alterna Space Center so the party could go there and save Cuttlefish, but is also hurt in the process, and the tool breaks down.

After discovering the dehydrated Cuttlefish, the captain is devastated along with the Squid Sisters. They hold Cuttlefish's body in their hands and cry. A drop of tear falls on Cuttlefish's body, and he is revitalized by the teardrop in his squid form.

Agent 4[]

Main article: Agent 4

Agent 4 initially went to Inkopolis for an unknown reason but got swept up in Marie's quest to save the Great Zapfish and her cousin Callie. In Octo Canyon, Agent 4 completes various missions to retrieve stolen Zapfish, defeating many Octarians along the way. Eventually, Agent 4 confronts DJ Octavio and a brainwashed Callie, rescuing the Great Zapfish, freeing Callie, and finally restoring Inkopolis' power supply.

Agent 8[]

Main article: Agent 8

Agent 8 was a trainee in the Octarian army and had a change of heart when they heard the Calamari Inkantation while observing the final battle of Splatoon, etching it onto their soul. According to Marina, Octolings that hear the song become discontent with Octarian society and choose to strike out on their own. In Octo Valley, Agent 8 encountered Cap'n Cuttlefish and Agent 3, where Cuttlefish had Agent 3 attack Agent 8. The two battled until all three of them were attacked by someone and were knocked into the Deepsea Metro. Agent 8 then lost their memories from injuries suffered during the fall through the ceiling, and after teaming up with Cuttlefish and escaping the Abandoned Station, became a test subject of the metro.

Agent 8's role is to complete a number of tests and collect four thangs to reach the promised land, or the surface. If they fail a test, a bomb attached to them is set off and they are exploded, losing a life. If you lose all of your lives, you fail the test and you have to pay to redo it.

If you lose all of your lives at least twice during a test, you are given the option to skip the test by paying the initial test fee. While this may seem good, you do not get the Mem Cake from that test, instead, you are given a grayed out one that counts to the line but does not count to the total needed to fight the secret final boss, Inner Agent 3.

If you die four times during a Test, you are given the option of skipping that particular test, which, if accepted, does not allow you to fight Inner Agent 3 until you complete the test normally. If declined, the life count resets, and you'll have to die another four times to get the prompt to appear again. This changes when fighting the mandatory Agent 3 battle and Commander Tartar to only one death.

New Agent 3[]

Main article: Agent 3 (Splatoon 3)

The new Agent 3 serves as the protagonist of Splatoon 3’s Return of the Mammalians campaign. Agent 3 was scrap hunters from the Splatlands, searching for scraps by day and splatting it up in Turf Wars on the side; they got swept up in the New Squidbeak Splatoon and are now the new Agent 3 in the continued fight against the evil Octarians. In Alterna, Agent 3 completes various missions, solving the mysteries of Alterna, and defeating many Octarians along the way.

Trivia[]

Splatoon[]

Splatoon 2[]

  • Based on Marie's dialogue stating that Agent 4 is "two years older" than Agent 3, one might assume that Agent 4 is at most 18 years old, as Agent 3 was about 14 years old around the events of Splatoon, and would be around 16 years old during the events of Splatoon 2.
    • This has been a topic of confusion and debate within the community, with many believing Agent 4 to still be 14, noting the Inklings' similar physical appearance to those of the first game. Marie's statements which would make Agent 4 roughly 18 years old also contradicts a statement made in an interview with Splatoon 2 producer Hisashi Nogami that "The previous playable Inklings would be around 16 now, so the new 14-year-old Inklings will step up to the plate. The playable Inklings will still be around 14." It is unknown if this is an oversight or not.
    • It has also been suggested that Marie's dialogue is a meta joke, directed not towards Agent 4, but towards the player who controls Agent 4 themselves.
    • it is likely that this is an error in translation, given that this line is not present in the Japanese version of the game.
  • Most promotional artwork and screenshots depict Agent 4's gender and appearance to be that of a female Inkling with the "Haircut" hairstyle, although some concept art and a segment of the credits depicts a male version of Agent 4 with the "Slick" hairstyle. This is less variable than the first game, which had multiple official artwork pieces depicting both female and male Inklings as Agent 3.
    • This is further evidenced by the final portion of the end credits, which depict a female Agent 4 celebrating alongside a reunited Callie and Marie.
  • One of Marie's dialogues when spoken to in Octo Canyon, reveals that she finds Agent 4 to be "pretty adorable".
    • She also states that Agent 4 has much better hygiene than Agent 3.
  • Agent 4's ink color varies based on the mission, it's also a specific color depending on each sector of Octo Canyon. They have yellow ink on Sector 1, green ink on both Sector 2 and Sector 5, and teal ink on both Sector 3 and 4.
  • No matter what bottoms they choose to wear, Agent 4 will wear the standard shorts from the first game when wearing the basic Hero Suit. They will wear the shorts and tights if they're male or the longer pants if they're female if they pick up armor.
  • It's revealed that Agent 4 (and presumably all Inklings) wears a sports bra (if female) or a tank top (if male) under their clothes when they're splatted in their basic Hero Suit.

Octo Expansion[]

    • Page 261 of HaikaraWalker shows an article detailing a rave called The Low Water Party in the Deepsea Metro where-in Agent 3 is shown disc jockeying by their alias "SANGO®". They were said to have an eight-hour-long DJ battle with Marina, a reference to the several appearances of the number eight in the Octo Expansion.
    • The names comes from Agent 3's Japanese name "3号" (San-Gō).
  • In both battles against Agent 3, they seem to not possess an Ink tank. It is unclear if this is a developer oversight or was purposefully not included as to not interfere with their cape.
  • The Octo Expansion art book, HaikaraWalker, includes a mid-development mockup of Agent 4 in a prototype version of the Deepsea Metro.

Splatoon 3[]

  • In The Art of Splatoon 3, Agent 4 & 8 was shown to be in an early concept for Splatoon 3's story mode.
  • Most promotional artwork and screenshots depict New Agent 3 as a feminine Inkling with the Megalobraid hairstyle, although some promotional screenshots and the cover artwork for The Art of Splatoon 3 depict them as a feminine and masculine Octoling, respectively. A depiction of masculine Inkling Agent 3 can be found in SplatNet 3. This is more variable than the second game, which had most official artwork pieces and promotional material depict a female Inkling as Agent 4.
