The Heavy Splatling is a Main Splatling weapon in Splatoon and Splatoon 2. It was released in the August 2015 major update.

Description

The Heavy Splatling must be charged up. It has a charging reticle, like Charger weapons, which can be filled up to twice as the fire button is held down. When the button is released, it unleashes a barrage of powerful ink shots that have extremely long range. The charge on the reticle winds down as the Heavy Splatling fires, so its barrage lasts an amount of time equal to how long it was charged. It comes with the Splash Wall as its Sub Weapon and the Inkstrike as its Special Weapon. Its damage is comparable to the Jet Squelcher because it takes four to six shots to splat an opponent.

Strategy

Splatlings have a special gimmick that means they require charging before releasing a huge bombardment of ink in a short amount of time creating a huge amount of devastation. Splatlings generally have a decent range and how long they fire ink for depends on how long you charge for. Their mobility is often limited while firing leaving them exposed at times.

The Heavy Splatling has one of the best ranges in the game and outranges all Shooter weapons in the game making it recommended for long range assaults. It also has the Splash Wallto protect you from incoming shots from enemies and enable you to charge without the fear of being attacked.

Tips against each weapon type

  • Shooters will vary depending on the circumstances. In long range circumstances you will have the upperhand as you outrange all of them (even the Jet Squelcher) so exploit your range and your rapid burst of ink to beat them. In close combat situations you are at a disadvantage as you have to charge and weapons with high firing rate like the Splash-o-matic  or high damage like the .96 Gal can exploit this and take you out easily. Iis best to set up a Splash Wall to protect you then abuse your range to splat them or force them back.
  • Rollers are the easiest matchup, just exploit your range and you shold be fine. Make sure you take care of them or at least know their location as they can easily attempt to sneak up on you and splat you. In addition use your Inkstrike in areas of high Roller activity.
  • Charger will be the most difficult to take care of as they outrange you. The best thing to do is to set up a Splash Wall close to them then unleash the devastation to splat them or force them to flee. In addition you can use your Inkstrke on the areas where Chargers are to force them off high ground then unleash the destruction.
  • Slosher can be tricky due to their arc motion and high damage. Even if you are standing at a high place you can still be damaged due to their great reach and arc. To deal wih them prevent them from getting close by using your range to take care of them. If they come close use a Splash Wall or retreat.
  • Splatlings will vary depending on the weapon. It is best t use your Splash Wall to protect you from enemy fire then strike back. You can also use an Inkstrke to splat them.

Trivia

  • This weapon appears to be based off the M134 Minigun, due to the rotary design of both the six barrels and the ammunition/ink system.
  • This could also be a reference to Team Fortress 2, where a class called the Heavy uses a minigun as one of  his main weapons. This is probably  where the name "Heavy Splatling" came from.
