Splats with Honor...Octo Samurai

The Octo Samurai (タコツボザムライ Takotsubozamurai?, lit. Octopus Pot Samurai) is an Octarian fighter and the second boss in Hero Mode of Splatoon 2.

Appearance[]

Untitled84

The Octo Samurai resembles an Octoling but much larger in size and more masculine. The Octo Samurai has a heavyweight and round body that is similar to as a sumo wrestler, small eyes, and sports a tentacle on the back of his head in a ponytail. He wears a black leather motorcycle jacket with golden embroidery on the sides and a print of DJ Octavio on the back. He carries his own Great Octoweapon that is similar to a Dynamo Roller that can change positions vertically or horizontally to the handle, and can combine with his unicycle to form a vehicle which Sheldon calls "The Octocycle".

Attacks[]

To defeat the Octo Samurai, the player must destroy his weapon. To do this, they must first bombard the boss with ink attacks until he pops, similar to a defeated Inkling or Octoling. After his "ghost" flies away, his Octocycle will flip over and expose its tentacle weak point.

First Phase[]

In the first part of the battle, the boss will fling its Splat Roller in a similar fashion to the Inkling version, but with a very wide range due to its larger size.

The Samurai can also get on top of his weapon and charge towards the player, this is when he uses the Octocycle, leaving behind a wide trail of ink; if he gets a direct hit, it's an instant splat. The boss pauses every time he does this, letting the player get in free hits, especially after the player hears the screech of him braking before dismounting the Octocycle. He always does a backward jump before doing his charge attack.

Second Phase[]

The Octo Samurai retains all of his Phase 1 attacks, along with two new moves:

  • He jumps towards the player and does a vertical swing with his splat roller.
  • He quickly spins around with his roller, leaving a large ring of ink. A direct hit is an instant splat, but the attack is telegraphed by the Octo Samurai raising his roller and flashing his eyes. The glint is an early warning to get clear before he has a chance to unleash the spin attack.

Third Phase[]

Untitled49

The Octo Samurai gains one new attack, and most of his other attacks become more vicious:

  • The Octo Samurai performs three, extremely long ranged vertical swings. This attack is telegraphed by him raising his Splat Roller and spinning the head rapidly.
  • His charge attack now aims directly at you. He still takes a break after this.
  • He will always swing three times in a row when he does his regular swing.
  • He always follow up his jump attack with three vertical swings. These swings are not as long-ranged as his other vertical swing attacks.
  • If he is able to pull off his Octocycle attack, after the first charge across the arena, he will quickly turn around to launch a second charge, hopefully catching the player off-guard to splat them on the second pass before they can escape before he dismounts from his Octocycle.

Octo Expansion[]

In the Octo Expansion, the Octo Samurai returns in Whack-Fu Station. He has all the same moves he had with his fight with Agent 4, but this time tries to knock Agent 8 (who is in a Baller) off the platform instead of splatting them directly. After the Octocycle's tentacle has been splatted three times, it explodes, with the Octo Samurai once again defeated.

Trivia[]

Dead Octoling

An Octoling's "ghost". Octo Samurai also leaves behind a similar-looking ghost after he gets "splatted".

  • Whenever Octo Samurai gets splatted, an octopus-like ghost (similar to those left behind by splatted Octolings) will fly back to his Respawn Point, and will always attempt to do so even as his Respawn Point/Octocycle is about to explode into Ink. This may suggest that Octo Samurai might be a male Octoling himself (like DJ Octavio).
